Thiessen
Team USA has two modern, computer controlled shotcrete
plants for mixing and bagging a variety of shotcrete
and other materials. The Shotcrete aggregate is
thoroughly dried and then mixed with cement and
admixture in precise quantities to accurately
formulate the required shotcrete mix. This mixture
is then placed in reinforced 1 cubic yard or 1/2
cubic yards bags and wrapped with water proofing
plastic to protect the contents from absorbing
moisture. These bags can be exposed to the elements
up to a year without concern of contamination
of the shotcrete. The bagged shotcrete is then
placed on pallets for easy transportation to the
job site.

Superstick
Shotcrete
Description
Superstick Shotcrete is a preblended, dry shotcrete
containing silica fume and other carefully selected
components. Superstick Shotcrete has greatly enhanced
shooting characteristics and physical properties.
Uses
In the dry process, the Superstick Shotcrete is
blown through the hose and mixing water is added
at the nozzle. The shotcrete impacts the surface
at a high velocity resulting in a well-compacted,
high quality concrete with excellent bond. Some
common uses include:
- Slope stabilization
- Initial and secondary tunnel support
- Structural linings
- Concrete rehabilitation
|
Superstick Shotcrete may be used in combination
with steel fibre reinforcement to enhance load carrying
capacity and with non-caustic Scamper 16 shotcrete
accelerator to provide high strengths and fast set
times. It can be blended to meet ACI 506 gradation
#1 or #2.
Advantages
Stickiness. Superstick Shotcrete has vastly improved
cohesion characteristics compared to conventional
shotcrete. This stickiness saves time and money
because:
- Rebound is significantly reduced, resulting
in lower usage.
- Sagging and sloughing are eliminated.
- Thick layers can be applied in a single
pass in both the vertical and overhead
orientations without the use of caustic
accelerators. This increases shooting
efficiency. Passing over work two or three
times to achieve a certain thickness is
no longer necessary.

Admixtures for Shotcrete and Concrete
Silica
Fume
Description
Silica Fume is an extremely fine powder that is
100 times finer than cement particles. Silica
Fume concrete is very durable and highly resistant
to freeze-thaw cycles and to chemical aggressive
agents of many kinds.
Uses
Silica Fume concrete is recommended for sewage pipes,
waste water treatment plants, food and dairy products
plants, pulp and paper plants, fertilizer plants
and for any concrete work that may be in contact
with aggressive chemical products.
Water-Reducing
Agents
Description
Water-reducing admixtures lower water requirements
in concrete typically 8 to 10% thereby, producing
greater plasticity and higher strength.
Uses
Water-reducing admixtures are used in almost every
type of ready-mix concrete including lightweight
and prestressed work. It produces a plastic concrete
that is more workable, easier to place and more
finishable than plain concrete. Also, it produces
higher compressive and flexural strengths at all
ages than untreated conventional concrete.
Superplasticizer
Description
Superplasticizers are a high range water reducer
having a great capacity to disperse the cement
agglomerates found in mixtures of water and cement.
Uses
Superplasticizer are ideal for use in any concrete
where it is desired to keep the water/cement ratio
to a minimum and still achieve a degree of workability
and placement. It produces a high slump flowable
concrete at no loss in strength, or a lower slump
concrete with high strengths.
Initial
Set Retarder
Description
This admixture retards the initial and final set
of concrete. At a rate of 3 fl oz/100 lb of cement,
it will extend the initial setting time of Portland
cement by 2 to 3 hours a 70O F. Along with set
retardation properties, this admixture also provides
water-reduction of about 8 to 10% in concrete
mixes.
Uses
This retarder is used wherever a delay in setting
time will insure sufficient delivery, placement,
vibration or compaction time. It is designed for
use on jobs where high temperatures or extended
setting times are the prime factors. When time and
temperature are not a major consideration, a water-reducing
admixture should be used.
Hydration
Stabilizer
Description
Hydration stabilizers are advanced set retarders.
While conventional set retarders are used to slow
concrete set times, hydration stabilizers are
formulated to provide extended control ranging
from a few hours of delayed set to over 30 hours.
Uses
With hydration stabilizer, the window of delayed
set can be extended in a predictable manner to
bring new flexibility and opportunity such as:
- Permits long hauls to remote sites.
- Allows for extended mixer discharge
times.
- Reduces need for portable batch plants.
- Controls temperature increase.
- Provides predictable extended set for
continuous placement on mass placement
projects.
|
Similar to other retarders, hydration stabilizers
show an increase in strength and quality compared
to conventional concrete. |
